AHO Architecture Lecture Series No 0004: Timothy Smith & Jonathan Taylor: Marginal Classicism

We have invited the London based duo Timothy Smith and Jonathan Taylor to give us a talk about their relation to classicism as both practitioners and teaching architects. Welcome to our second lecture this fall!

Timothy Smith and Jonathan Taylor studied together at Edinburgh College of Art and KADK Copenhagen, and Timothy completed his studies at London Metropolitan University. They formed their practice in 2010 after several years of collaboration. Current projects include alterations to a historic London house, a mixed use conversion, a housing development and private residential projects.

Both partners teach an MArch design unit at Kingston School of Art, London, which is the only architectural design studio in Europe teaching the principles and application of the classical language of architecture. They also teach on the Engelsberg Summer School in Classical Architecture in Sweden, and have been guest critics at Yale, Cambridge and ETH Zürich.

In their practice and their teaching they investigate the potential of classicism as a living language of architecture. They engage with this way of thinking, not through nostalgia or sentimentality, but with criticality. Work by the practice and their students is currently on display at the Lisbon Triennial as part of the exhibition “What Is Ornament?”.
