Far Side Of The Moon

Introduction to the contemporary art & architecture of Iran

Having the stamp of Iranian is not easy sometimes! Especially in the face of questions which seen to be influenced by the art of media, mall representation, and rumours.

In response, we decided to face this fact by sharing stories from the heart of the young generation in Iran, stories from the other side of the moon.

This approach started two years ago in KADK (Royal Danish Academy) where we chronologically presented the art and architecture of Iran focusing on the importance of showing the history and the values that we still refer to as “good times of Iran”.

However, this time, we don’t want to give our audiences what they can find in lots of nice references, but we want to bring them on a journey behind the thick curtains of propaganda. We understand that still showing the roots of art and architecture in that region is a foundation to start with, but yet, let’s add the flavour of some critical viewpoint to it and focus on the current situation of them.

Hence, in the following presentation, we want to talk about three different parts with a concentration on contemporary art and architecture; the first part consists of a brief about main roots and turning points with respect to social history from 10000 BC until the end of Qajar dynasty (1794–1906), and in the second part we will focus on contemporary art and architecture of Iran starting from the first student who was sent abroad until the 8 years of war between Iran and Iraq (1980-1988). At last, we will focus on the current situation of art and architecture with a realistic perspective from the “today” of our country! Towards the end, we will give us the pleasure of open discussions and debate.

So please, join us in our storytelling night, this time in Oslo at AHO.
