Guest lecture: Jörn Walter

Wecome to the double lecture The sustainability, architecture and urbanity of HafenCity Hamburg with Professor Jörn Walter at AHO!

Walter has been the Oberbaudirektor for Hamburg during 18 years, from 1999 to 2017. As planning director and city architect combined, Walter led the urban development of Hamburg through extensive transformations, HafenCity being the largest in scale and ambitions.
Walter has been professor at several universities including TU Wien, TU Dresden, Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg, now at HafenCity Universität Hamburg. He publishes on questions of urban development and architecture, mainly in German. In this English lecture, he will share his overview, insights and reflections on the HafenCity Hamburg.
The development of HafenCity Hamburg from a harbour area to an inner-city includes eight neighbourhoods covering an area of 157 hectare. It is based upon an innovative flood protection strategy and is home to the Elbphilarmonie and the historical Speicherstadt. HafenCity stands out as a very important European reference project – praised and discussed – in regard to sustainability, architecture and urbanity.
