The chair of Valerio Olgiati at Accademia di Architettura, Universita della Svizzera italiana, has developed a very particular pedagogical approach for over more than 15 years of teaching experience.
Reality asks architects to build buildings on specific sites, with economic constraints and a specific program. However, we believe that students at this stage of education should be encouraged to develop a project starting from an architectural idea, clarifying it and making it architecturally precise during the design process, to be able then to distinguish it from what is a mere a solution.
An idea is developed from the topics which represent basic architectonic typologies. This is why we propose our students to work with topics which have a general character: to make them think and to reason about fundamental aspects of architecture as a basis to formulate their own ideas. Where the building sits, how big it is, what function it has or what material it is made of, will be the result of translating a single idea into its right architectural form. It may therefore be a small object, an urban gesture or even a landscape.
