Design students wins Mayor Cup

Master student Jomy Joseph has won the "Mayor Cup" Creative China International Industrial Design Competition, for his project Orja' an open source energy movement.

'Orja' is an open source energy movement that through a decentralised intervention, redefines the means of universal energy access. It is meant to help remote societies transition to a more "real" and tangible renewable energy future. In its early form it is deployed as a "DIT: do it together" floating wind farm that reconnects the notion of energy back to its natural source. In later years, our understanding of energy systems evolves into a form of holistic symbiosis. 'Orja' then transforms into an algal and microbial fuel cell that nurtures energy loops of our future biomes into a symbiotic energy paradigm.

The Hangzhou Mayor Cup is an annual industrial design competition organised by the Municipal Government of Hangzhou (China), Hangzhou Science and Technology Commission, China Academy of Art: School of Design and the China Industrial Design Association.

The competition has two categories of Product and Creative which attracted 5472 participants from China and around the world including enterprises, universities, design agencies and individuals.

Joseph won the Silver Award in the 'Creative' Category
