This thesis addresses new urban waterfront redevelopments in Oslo between 1982 and 2012. It approaches such environments as built form within the “Entrepreneurial City,” discussing them both as physical objects and as a particular mode of urban development, executed within a specific political-economic climate. Through the study of two waterfront redevelopments in Oslo; Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen, the research discloses how ideals and interpretations of the city affects the urban environment, and expose the dynamics between architecture, urban form and entrepreneurial modes of planning and governance.
The thesis relates to a broad scope of urban research that scrutinizes forms of fragmentation, gentrification and the aesthetics of contemporary urban landscapes, but is fundamentally based on a morphological approach to research on the city: Urban form, and the processes that generate urban form. The aim of the research has been to bring insights to the relations between architectural practice forms, political economic conduct and the project-based development strategies that characterize Oslo’s urban waterfront today.
