AHO Guest Lecture Fall 2022 - OAT Academy 2022

Lecture title: (RE)acting/(EN)acting, Curating architecture
Watch the lecture here: https://aho.cloud.panopto.eu

This evening’s presentations and discussion panel will be centered around the theme of curation and architecture. This event brings together Afaina De Jong (teacher, architect, and founder of the Amsterdam-based office AFARAI) and James Taylor-Foster (curator of contemporary architecture and design at ArkDes in Stockholm) for a session of presentations and a panel discussion moderated by Victoria Bugge Øye (curator of modern architecture at Nasjonalmuseet) and Paul-Antoine Lucas (assistant professor at AHO).

During this event, we will debate curation and mediation as an architectural practice engaging politically with contemporary social, political, and disciplinary challenges. Through this discussion, we are curious to learn about the role of cultural institutions in cities today and how different approaches to architecture mediation and curation can reach out to a wider audience and actively engage with communities. We want to broaden the spectrum of what practicing architecture means today and the different ways in which our profession can engage with the multiple crises we are facing today. We invited international experts to talk about their works, inspirations, ambitions, and methods, to understand the questions and interests that motivate them within a broader disciplinary, political, and social context.

This event is part of the discussion series of the OAT Academy 2022: (RE)acting/(EN)acting – Collective Dissidence, Reclaiming the Neighborhood, an academic forum of the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) for the Oslo Architecture Triennale, and elaborated in collaboration with the Fall 2022 Guest Lecture Series at AHO.

Architect Afaina de Jong’s Amsterdam-based studio AFARAI specializes in spatial design. The  studio’s aim is to cross the boundaries of the traditional architecture practice by dealing with the    existing city with an intersectional and interdisciplinary approach, integrating theory and research  with design. With her creative studio AFARAI she works on the boundary oarchitecture and art.

Her work is deeply connected to represent people and cultural movements that are not traditionally represented in architectural form. As a studio AFARAI considers itself a feminist practice that encourages change on social and spatial issues and that accommodate differences. De Jong is the head of the Contextual Design MA department at Design Academy Eindhoven. Her design research “The Multiplicity of Other” was commissioned for the Dutch Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2021.

potrait_2022_james_taylor-foster_nelta_kasparian.jpgJames Taylor-Foster is a writer and cultural worker. He is the curator of contemporary architecture and design at ArkDes, the Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design, in Stockholm. Through his curatorial works, James seeks to bridge the gap between the fields of architecture, design, popular culture, e-culture and technology.

During his time at ArkDes, Taylor-Foster has curated various exhibitions such as “Cruising Pavilion: Architecture, Gay Sex, Cruising Culture” (2019) and the Utomhusverket installations by Studio Ossidiana (2021) and Mira Bergh x Josefin Zachrisson (2022). He recently curated the exhibition currently on show in London at the Design Museum “WEIRD SENSATION FEELS GOOD: an exhibition about ASMR“, previously at ArkDes in 2020, which illustrates how he aims to bring contemporary cultural phenomena to academic institutions, catering to new audiences and engaging in a much needed institutional questioning.
