Welcome to the talk "Future Empathy Expertise: The Ongoing Politicking involved in Transition Designing" by Cameron Tonkinwise at 13:00 pm at AHO.

Commercial design is dominated by human-centered methods. A prevalent claim is that designers have distinctive modes of creative-yet-practical empathy. This disposition is clearly desirable in today’s world, but it leads to a prioritizing of immediate responses.

Many of our societies’ problems require multi-level, multi-stage change. Such ‘transition designs’ often involve trade-offs – short-term sacrifices, or at least effortful learning of new practices, in the name of longer-term structural change toward more sustainable futures.

However, because such systems designing involves going against, to some extent, what empathetic research validates, designers need to reassert their authority as experts. This talk will outline the kind of politicking that transition designers are required to do in order to persuade communities to participate in experiments toward systems-level change over time.
