«Liv Lagra» is an explorative design project about intangible cultural heritage in coastal communities in Nordland. Using the fishing village Røst in Lofoten as a case study, the project investigates ways in which the cultural heritage that exists in coastal communities can be preserved for future generations.

Through sketching and prototyping, the project explores several topics connected to the sea and coastal culture such as weather, language, the understanding of landscape, craftsmanship, navigation, and myths. These explorations have resulted in three concepts I have called «Lokale Forhold»; a weather service that shows the forecast by using local descriptions of the weather, «I Fjæra»; an app that encourages use and exploration of the «shore» and «Heimsjyen»; an app for finding fishing spots by reading landmarks. The concepts aren’t meant to be finalized products, but rather as examples on how to pass on and make use of local knowledge through a digital platform.

In discussing the concepts with several experts in the field of cultural preservation, it has become clear that project has highlighted the potential design has in bringing in new perspectives on exploring and communicating cultural heritage.
