Project Speechless explores the landscape within Norwegian language education for immigrants. It takes a critical look at the ongoing political developments in Norway and suggests a way to address these changes within existing education services.

The proposal is a concept set into the world to explore the potential of everyday interactions as a basis for future development in language education. In order to achieve this, the project raises awareness surrounding the difficulties of learning a new language through storytelling and helps leaners become more comfortable using their target language in real life. The barriers that learners face are made visible in an animated short film and a collection of stories gathered directly from migrants, which they can submit online. The second part of the proposal is a method that can be used by learners whether they learn in a course, with volunteers, or with friends and family. The method consists of four guidelines and example exercises to help learners practice conversations to prepare for the real world.

Project Speechless also addresses the way the services in the field are being developed. There is a stunning variety of tools and services. Instead of competing with them, further developments in language education can benefit from standing on the shoulders of these established offers. Project Speechless is an example of how to shape an approach in such a way that it can integrate into the existing service ecosystem. This project does not propose a finalised solution but presents research and a concept in order to spark reflection across the system, from language learners to teachers to policymakers, so that they can make a change.
