«Sinsenhuset» is a project that deals with the challenges of loneliness, providing opportunities for people of all income groups to buy into the property market and the re-use of an existing building structure.
The building, formerly used as student housing, has large spaces in the core for shared functions. By reusing the building’s structure, it can easily be adapted to cohousing - a more sustainable, cheap and social way of living that connects people across generations.
Three main shared floors provides «Sinsenhuset» with enough space for everyone. A large shared kitchen combined with a dining area right next to a workshop, is located on ground floor with access to outdoor spaces. Further up there’s a orangeri for growing vegetables and microgreens, and doubles up as an outdoor space during winter months. The roof top terrace provides the residents with a beautiful view over Oslo and a small indoor space for parties, BBQs and hobbies.
Due to the fact that all of the existing walls between the dorms are a part of the construction, they can not to be removed. Thus, the apartments had to cooperate with almost all of the existing walls, and at the same time deal with universal design and plumbing shafts. And in order to fit as many different types of people into the building, there are three different types of floor plans. A neighborhood-, a coliving- and a student floor provides a rich variety with apartments for everyone.
On top of the existing building, above the orangeri, there’s a three story onfill in mass timber with four large apartments on each floor. The facade on the onfill is glass with large wooden fins on the outside that take up the lines of the existing facade, yet works as sun shading and provides privacy.
