This diploma project seeks to reimagine the Nylandsbrua traffic bridge and the complex of spaces beneath it – a layered structure that has dominated Vaterland for almost 50 years – and transform it from an artefact of carbon mo-bility into an active and meaningful public space for the post-carbon society.
The traffic bridge is re-programmed so as to maintain a barrier against gentrification albeit with different means than before. It is made attractive and fortified through a program of public interest, and further utilised to create a green connection between the river promenade and the fjord, continuing over the railway tracks of the Oslo Central Sta-tion. Grønland is a spatially small but diverse district, marked by a wide range of stake-holders.
This project is a counterproposal to letting the market regulate itself through neo-liberal approaches. It challengs the notion of the municipal regeneration programs known as områdeløft (lit. “area boost”) as these have proven to be most successful in paving way for an increased intrusion of the creative class into these previously working-class neigh-borhoods. Instead, the project responds to the needs of the current residents by support-ing local incentives, addressing the youth between the ages of 13 and 26, strengthening green mobility, and expanding the range of open spaces for public recreation.
