Iceland is a country of renewable energy. 85% of the energy supply is through hydropower and geothermal sources. In 2009, Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Plant was opened. Harnessing the power of Jökulsá á Dal glacial river, the project is the largest of its kind in Iceland(690 MW).
The project takes the users, locals and tourists alike, along a new trail that spreads covers the whole length of the now dried river. Along the way, three landscape ‘objects’ are introduced. The objects will help visitors understand how the landscape through time has been shaped by water flow and erosion and how we as humans now interfere with these processes in sometime unexpected ways, altering natural processes. They act as land art pieces, memorials of the past-scape dealing with the current natural events.
