As a contribution to The World Conference on Timber Engineering 2023 taking place in Oslo from 19.-22. June, AHO exhibits the results of two master studio courses that have investigated the design potential of waste materials. Welcome to the opening on June 18th at 16:00 at AHO’s byggehall! Irene Alma Lønne, rector at AHO, will open the exhibition. 
 

Re:Source Pavilion (Timber Studio fall 2022) focused on “disregarded” wooden materials – waste wood from demolitions, cut-offs from construction sites, cut-outs from CLT production, wood that had served as concrete formwork, worn out pallets and materials from obsolete barns. The environmental potential of wooden materials is maximized with their prolonged life span. 21 students have explored the materials’ poetic and conceptual potential, their constructive capacity and the role of various joining options.

Come and see what 1m pieces of the school’s old roof terrace boards have been turned into, how various types of wood waste can be assembled into larger construction elements, alternative designs for a pavilion at Oslo S and 1:1 mock-ups! One of the students’ pavilion designs will be mounted at Oslo Central Station and can be visited from 18.- 25. June.

The organizers of WCTE 2023 initiated a pavilion as a side event to The World Conference on Timber Engineering 2023 in Oslo. The Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) contributed through a master studio course to develop the pavilion’s design. The final student concept for the pavilion “Fletning” is realized in a collaboration with master’s students and teachers at the School of Architecture and Design in Oslo (AHO), Norwegian engineering companies, material suppliers and manufacturers.

Oslo Løa (Climate Form Studio spring 2023), a temporary floating pavilion, was designed and built by AHO students across institutes, in collaboration with Nordic Ocean Watch and industrial partners. The project goal is to raise awareness about marine pollution and urgent environmental issues. The pavilion hosts activities, engaging Oslo citizens in waste sorting and recycling. The students' creative and professional approach led to a playful yet rational structure, connecting people with nature while providing effective shelter. The outcome demonstrates the application of circular construction principles, leading to innovative architectural solutions, product prototypes, and efficient utilization of short length timber. With a manual for assembly/disassembly, the structure can be demounted, transported and relocated, ensuring a prolonged lifespan. Oslo Løa is currently installed in front of the Oslo Opera House.
