Norwegian lighthouses, now automated and decommissioned, face an existential challenge. Rendered increasingly obsolete by technological advances, these structures, devoid of regular ongoing maintenance, languish in decay.

Coastal Memories delves into this typology, as neglected coastal heritage, centered around the intricate play between the past and future of Træna Lighthouse. Conceived as a monument of the past, the diploma endeavors to preserve the structure by repurposing it for future dissemination.

Integrating historical layers to the future of Træna Lighthouse, this diploma presents a speculative timeline, outlining transformative interventions towards reopening the structure for public use. Given the constraints of limited financial support and scarce coastal resources, the timeline serves as a tool to unleash architectural potential inherent in the structure. While certain interventions demand substantial funding and professional expertise, a considerable aspect of the building’s restoration is envisioned to rely on volunteer participation – a collaborative venture involving locals and voluntourism. Finally, the project highlights the potential in reuse of lighthouses with an aim to facilitate visitors with experiences of their extense history and context.
