Abstract:
While transformations toward regeneration are messy, entangled, and uncertain, research methodologies do not necessarily align with this complexity. Could embracing situated, plural, and adaptive methodologies open new pathways for cultivating regenerative futures? This thesis embarks on a “systemic design journey” of prototyping methodological pluralism in practice, as a pathway towards regeneration in the real world. Through combining community-based participatory action research and systems-oriented design in a longitudinal engagement across three mountain communities—Ostana (Italy), Hemsedal (Norway), and Mammoth Lakes (USA)—this work experiments with diverse approaches to engage with complex social-ecological challenges. By integrating plural methods from social sciences, design research, and embodied practices, it illustrates how pluralism can cultivate new ways of reconnecting with the broader web of life. By weaving together multi-modal insights through rich visualizations, this study challenges us to rethink how we engage with complexity and uncertainty in the pursuit of regenerative futures.

Biography:
Haley Fitzpatrick is an architect and systemic design researcher engaging in community based
transformations toward regeneration. Before her doctoral research, Haley practiced architecture across internationally renowned firms, such as Renzo Piano Building Workshop in Genova, Italy. Currently, she is a Design Associate at the MonViso Institute, a living systems lab for research, education, and entrepreneurship for regenerative design, and a Senior Advisor at the Collaborative for Bioregional Action Learning & Transformation (COBALT).
