Required prerequisite knowledge

Admission to AHO and successful completion of three years bachelor level studies (180 ECTS).

It is recommended that the students have taken 80 162 GK6 Arkitekturteorienes historie.

The students must be conversant in English and preferably familiar with academic writing.

Course content

The course surveys architectural thinking from the last two decades, looking at contradictory and complementary tendencies on the contemporary scene. Each week we read and discuss texts on a particular theme, ranging from the many alleged “turns” in contemporary architecture, to overriding topics such as gender, colonialism, and climate change.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

  • The students will aquire an overview and understanding of contemporary architectual theory.

Skills:

  • The students will gain practice in reading and discussing theoretical texts, as well as in academic writing.

General competence:

  • Training in theoretical thinking and argumentation.
Working and learning activities

The course is run as a series of reading seminars where students and staff study and discuss key texts in the field. Invited lecturers will give introductions to the various themes.
