This project is a study on the form and use of public spaces in Shipai Village, a typical Urban Village in China.

I use drawings on a set of scales to represent outdoor space as rooms. These rooms serve as sharing kitchens, dining rooms, living rooms, storages and stimulate more human contact and social interaction.

Instead of defining open space as ‘between buildings’, this project states “streets are the new buildings” in this extremely dense neighbourhood.

I am using this study to communicate with urban planners in China. The notion of "streets as rooms and building" is meant to serve or inspire another model of urban space for future Chinese cities, which are growing denser and denser inevitably, but are about to lose the social quality of the in-between spaces.
