Æ E Æ Å – Reshaping the Role of Træna Fishermen

Diploma project

Autumn 2022
Institute of Architecture

Thomas Gregory Mc Quillan
This diploma project aims to strengthen the viability of Træna’s community by proposing an ocean research facility in the archipelago, enabling the next generation of local fishermen to collect oceanographic data while working at sea. The idea of the fisherman as oceanographer is inextricably linked to the architectural program on the island of Ytterhakksholmen: the idea created the architecture, and the architecture enables the idea.

Besides the ocean research facility, the program on the Island also features a sauna, locker rooms, high-dive platform, and a lookout point oriented towards the iconic mountain of Trænstaven – answering to needs and wishes of the local community and its visitors.

The title Æ E Æ Å – meaning I also exist in the local dialect – refers to the remote archipelago and its community, but also to the vulnerable and ecologically important cold-water corals in the surrounding waters, that might be discovered and protected through the project.
