The Academy at Stenersen Museum

The Academy at Stenersen Museum

Over the course of 8 days, 124 students and 31 faculty members from 14 schools located in 12 countries, will inhabit the Stenersen Museum in Oslo, which has been closed to the public since December of 2015. Composed by architects, artists and urban planners, the group will partake in a unique Academy program, one of 2016 OAT’s core line up. Alongside a semester-long lecture series, multiple exhibitions, and the upcoming AHO Party, The Academy is among the school’s contributions to After Belonging’s extended program organised by OAT.
Why the Academy?
“With The Academy, AHO is aiming to give students from all over the world the chance to see the Triennale exhibition and take part in a global conversation on architecture’s role in a global society” says Assistant Professor and AHO’s Triennale program coordinator Léa-Catherine Szacka. The Academy was developed by a team at AHO, together with After Belonging Agency, Chief Curators of the 2016 OAT who, in a recent interview said: “Schools, as forums of future practitioners and thinkers, are key interlocutors for us. We want to involve them in a conversation on architecture’s relation to changing notions of permanence, property and identity.”

What is the Academy?
The Academy develops around a program of events including field visits, workshops, roundtables and lectures and it will focus on the Oslo neighborhoods of Grønland and Tøyen. Besides, the After Belonging Agency. Admits the changing European political context and current migration and refugee crisis in the continent. Grønland and Tøyen allows us to question the way in which architecture and urbanism contribute to migratory trends. The outcome will be a collective production.

What can we expect?
“A pedagogical experiment, we hope that The Academy will be an incubator for ideas. Moreover, it concretely addresses issues of After Belonging since most of the visiting students will be hosted in pairs at AHO, which is generously opening their houses and dorms to students from Sydney, Milan, Paris, Hong Kong, etc.” says Szacka. Two entire AHO master studios (Hong Kong the Hub City and In Transit) will join The Academy. Lectures, discussions and working sessions will take place in the closed Stenersen Museum, a building that is in search of a new identity. After Belonging Agency underlines how The Academy bridges the local and the global, bringing young people from outside Norway to observe and reflect on local realities: “The Triennale has a global ambition, reaching to territories beyond Norway. However, The Academy also tests how global paradigms result in transformations that affect Oslo. We are inviting schools from different countries to meet in the neighborhoods of Grønland and Tøyen. Together with local agents, faculty and students will discuss how global circulatory processes have affected the spaces of residence, contributing to the future imaginations of the neighborhood."
