Students impress the UDI

Students from the master course In Transit II have presented alternative solutions to accommodation of asylum seekers for The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI).

Last semester, the students Kevin Benny Kuriakose, Ørjan Olav Johannesen, Heini Hiukka and Alexander Tunby Rosseland worked on housing for asylum seekers. The task was to come up with realistic and innovative solutions for creating dignified living arrangements for asylum seekers while also benefiting their host community; to achieve neighborhood coherence and social cohesion between the new arrivals and the host community. The proposed interventions should ensure: dignity and comfort; privacy and personal Space; and social interaction.

UDI was involved in the course as guest lectureres and visited the exhibition AHO WORKS in December to see the results.

They quickly decided to invite the students to their office in Hausmannsgate to present their proposals for other staff.

Advisor Tellef Grønlie said the course topic is particularily relevant for UDI.

- We were very impressed with the results. Not only with the innovative approach but also the presentation with great illustrations and models. We hadn't plan to exhibit the works but when we saw the result we decided to present them as an exhibition at UDI. We've had lots of positive feedback about the exhibition, said Grønlie.

One of the tasks was to develop an urban planning strategy that includes a mix of temporary and permanent housing, and urban design interventions for the Tøyen neighborhood. Images below.
