Diplomprosjekt
Industridesign
Vår 2021
Institutt for design
This diploma is investigating how to develop a design language that can scale across multiple classes of ships, and how a design guideline for ships can be created by using inspiration from UI design systems as to structuring the work and making it accessible for other designers in a team.
This project has been carried out in collaboration with VARD ASA, a major global shipbuilder and designer of specialised vessels. The new design language is an incremental upgrade to VARDs design language, developed to adapt to multiple vessel categories as to enhancing the VARD identity across their range of ships as they enter new markets.
The main deliverable of the project is a design system for ships, made for design teams and engineers to use in their design process when making a wide range of vessel types. The project is investigating how state-of-the-art GUI design systems and brand manuals from interaction design can be brought into the development of a design language for ships as complex products. The intention of the design system is to rationalise the design process, to help maintaining a coherent design language across mega-scale design projects, and to make the design more accessible for a large team of designers.
The design system is showcased through three ships based on existing VARD ships to show different components in use: A Multi-purpose vessel, a cruise vessel, and a fishing vessel.
