Soria Moria castle - Museum for Theodor Kittelsen

Diplomprosjekt

Høst 2019
Institutt for arkitektur

Beate Marie Manthey Hølmebakk
The aim of the project is to develop a museum design for Norwegian artist Theodor Kittelsen (1857 – 1914) in Sigdal, Norway. Kittelsen is well known for his folktale illustrations and evocative paintings of trolls, animals and landscapes.

The museum, located next to Kittelsen’s home and former atelier at Lauvlia in Sigdal, will be a research and learning center commemorating Kittelsen’s work and life. The museum will facilitate functional workplace for the staff and archive of the artworks as well.

The name Soria Moria Castle originated from a best-known Norwegian folktales made by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe. The journey of searching Soria Moria castle might be thought of as a progression, the symbol for perfect happiness. Kittelsen created a series of painting based on this story during his stay in Lauvlia.

The intention of the museum is based on the ambiguity between reality and fantasy, between tangible and intangible. This quality can be easily found in Kittelsen’s work. Imaginative troll and realistic forest coexist harmoniously in the same drawing. Instead of conventional museum “white box” style exhibition room, I designed a museum with curved walls to fit the diversity of characters in the artworks.

The museum of Theodor Kittelsen will become a public venue welcoming both children and adults who are attracted by Kittelsen’s fantasy world.
