«If I tell you that the city toward which my journey tends
is discontinuous in space and time,
now scattered, now more condensed,
you must not believe the search for it can stop»

I am Norwegian with both parents from Colombia. I wished to study Colombia through its vernacular architecture. Globally, Colombia ranks high in the number of displaced people. Internally due to a decade long civil war, and externally due to a Venezuelan migration crisis. I was curious about what architecture and context this would lead me to.  Cucuta is a major border city that has received the largest impact of the migration crisis. Cucuta practically functions as a bottleneck of Venezuelan migrants and Colombian returnees.

The Norwegian national identity is to be found in the countryside. Here, a cultural uniqueness had remained during the 400 year long union with Denmark. The mode of life in the countryside and aesthetic of untouched nature became symbols of the Nor-wegian national soul. Derived from this fascination of nature, friluftsliv became a deeply ingrained part of Norwegian culture. Friluftsliv can be roughly translated into “out-doors life”, and entails spending time in, hiking, and experiencing nature. The term is said to originate from the poem “Paa vidderne” (On the Heights) by Henrik Ibsen

The greater Reykjavik area is taking a step away from the domination of the private car. The century of mixed transportation has arrived: bicycles, busses, scooters, even with walking, have become a thing in Iceland. The weather in Reykjavik —” the four seasons of autumn,”— is used as a common excuse to give importance to the private car. In reality, both the problem and the solution are manmade. The problem is the scale of the city, density.
