Master of Design

Students with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent undergraduate education in design studies are welcome to apply for admission to the International Master of Design at AHO.
For the coming Academic year, we offer 15 places of study in Master of Design, divided between the different specialities.

Formal requirements

1. Bachelor degree with 180 ECTS

To be eligible for Master of Design, you need to document for a Bachelor's degree and at least 80 ECTS in design related courses.

Click on each specialization to see the recommended skills:
Industrial design

- ability to use a computer aided design tool (CAD) on an advanced level
- ability to work with physical models, both as a process method and for presentation purposes.
- ability to use hand drawings, both conceptually and communicatively

Interaction design

Applicants should have demonstrable experience in designing for interactive experiences and digital services. This should be evident through project work in designing for digital interfaces, user-experience, communication and screen-based interactions. It would be an advantage for the applicant to be familiar with designing for digital interactions across Web and software applications, as well as other digital materials and formats (including tangible interactions and interactive products). The applicant should have experience from iterative, digital design processes and concept development, as well as skills in developing and testing interactive prototypes with users. 

Service Design

Expectations for students applying for masters in Service design at AHO:
Students should have demonstrable experience of designing for service. This should be evident through project work and the use of visualization and communication tools such as the customer journey, blueprint, story boarding, experience prototyping, evidencing, etc.

It would also be an advantage for the student to have some understanding of concepts relating to service design such as, the value network, time as a design material, actor networks, value in use, design for experience, etc.

Required documents:

Transcript of records from previous relevant education

Please upload your Transcript of Records and Diploma from relevant, higher education (University level). The documentation must be in English or a Scandinavian language.

The documentation must include:

  • Name of the school, univeristy or institution
  • Year and term for your studies
  • Results for each course you have completed

If your university cannot issue a Transcript of Records or Diploma Supplement in English or a Scandinavian language, you must provide a certified translation. You cannot translate the documents yourself. 
If you have done relevant courses in addition to your undergraduate degree, you may upload these.
 
If you have not completed your bachelor degree by the application deadline, supply the information you have at the time of applying, such as Transcript of Records and formal documentation about the courses in progress. Submit your final degree transcripts and Diploma as soon as you have received these.

Your degree must be completed by semester start in August.

Documentation of satisfactory knowledge of English

International applicants from outside the Nordic countries must document satisfactory English language knowledge. Please read more here.

CV

List your education and relevant jobs, etc. The CV must be submitted in English or a Scandinavian language. There is no particular requirements for the format or layout of the CV.

Digital Portfolio

The AHO Assessment Committee evaluates your portfolio. It must contain a selection of your works/projects, from studies and work experience. Criteria’s for assessment are knowledge and sensibility towards various aspects of design studies, skills and variety of representation, and portfolio design: structure, length, clarity and conveying of concept rather than completed and fulfilled assignments.
 
Your portfolio must be uploaded as one single pdf. file of maximum 15 MB. Links or websites will not be accepted as a submitted portfolio.

Motivation letter

State the reason why you have chosen the specific Master's programme, and also why you have chosen AHO. Explain the connection to your current studies in your choice of programme; List particular area of competence reached in your bachelor's education, and your proficiency in techniques, including digital tools. How will your interests and skills contribute to your success as a Master's student at AHO and what do you hope to gain by being admitted? What are your expectations for your future career and for the society where you will practice your profession? 
Max one A4 page in English.

Financial Declaration

*Applies only to applicants with citizenship from outside of EU, EEA and Switzerland.

Tuition fees will be charged to international students with citizenship from outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland. More information is available on our web page about costs and living.

Due to this, all applicants with citizenship from outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland must fill out and submit the form for financial declaration.

Students who have completed a bachelor’s degree or equivalent undergraduate education in landscape architecture, architecture or other related spatial design studies are welcome to apply for admission to the International Master of Landscape Architecture at AHO.
 
International applicants from outside the Nordic countries must document satisfactory English skills. NB! Documentation of satisfactory knowledge of English must be uploaded before March 1st. Make sure to plan to take the IELTS/TOEFL in time.

Application process

All applications must be submitted digitally through our online application service Søknadsweb. You can register your application between January 7th and March 1st , 12:00 (Noon).

In Søknadsweb you will first be asked to register as an international applicant. After registration you will receive an email with the logon credentials. It will not be possible to submit applications after 12:00 (Noon) (GMT +1) March 1st.). 
The following attachments must be uploaded to Søknadsweb in order to complete the application:

Documents must be uploaded in pdf or jpeg format. Maximum file size per document is 15 MB
If you complete your bachelor's degree later in the spring or summer, you must submit transcripts of records from the semesters you have completed by the application deadline.

Application guidelines

If the AHO Assessment Committee should find it necessary, applicants may be called for a video interview.
 

Portfolio

Your portfolio should be uploaded in a one-file pdf-format (max 15 MB) and will be evaluated by a jury (AHO Assessment Committee). Your portfolio should contain a selection of your works/projects and can be from both studies and work experience. The jury will look for knowledge and sensibility towards various aspects of landscape architecture/architecture studies, they will see if you manage to show skills and variety of representation, and also asses the layout of the portfolio: structure, length, clarity and conveying of concept rather than completed and fulfilled assignments. Absolute requirement is that the works must be your own.
 

Incomplete or late applications

Please note that it will not be possible to submit applications after 12.00 on March 1st. 
Incomplete applications and applications received after the deadline (by e-mail/regular mail) will not be taken into consideration.
 

Response to the application

The results will be ready by April 20th. From this date you can log on to Søknadsweb to check the status of your application.
 

Undergraduate diploma inspection

All applicants that get admitted to AHO must present original diploma with transcript of records from undergraduate studies for inspection upon arrival at AHO. Deadline: the first week of school

Applicants who hand in falsified documents will be reported to the police.

After the deadline

Your portfolio will be assessed by an Assessment Committee and you may be asked to do a video interview.

Response to the application will be given by 1 April.

Due to the high number of applicants, feedback on the portfolio will not be given.

Admission Decisions and Announcements

Publishing the results


The result of the admission to our International Master programmes at AHO will be published in the application portal Søknadsweb.

Offer for Admission


If you have received an offer of admission, you will receive a Letter of Admission from AHO. Please remember that you must accept or decline the offer within the stated deadline. Log in to Søknadweb and electronically submit your response.
 

Waiting list


Only 20 applicants are listed in the Waiting list. If you have been placed on a waiting list, you must accept or decline this to keep your spot. Log in to Søknadweb and electronically submit your response.

Applicants will not be informed of their number in line. If a place becomes available, and you are next on the waiting list, you will receive an offer of admission. Such offers may arrive up until start of classes.
 

Not qualified


Not qualified is the same as a rejection. This result indicates that we cannot see that you fulfil our admission requirements. Either you have not uploaded all the required documentation, or the documentation you have uploaded fail to show that you are formally qualified for the programme.
 

Appeal


Appeals regarding formal errors may be put before the Appeals Board at AHO. The Assessment Committees evaluation of the applicant's skills cannot be questioned.

Appeals must be submitted within 3 weeks after receiving this letter. For further information about the rights of appeal and methods of approach in case of an appeal, please contact us.
