Course content

The task is to develop a low-rice, high density settlement tuned to the
necessities of elderly people, but not limited to this group of users.
Historical and modern versions of courtyard houses or "atriumshus" will
be a point of departure. We will develop single housing units and
assemble variations upon these into a community of about 15 units.

A combination of private and collective functions shall be investigated,
as well as the threshold between them. The wall will
be a core discourse during the semester. There will be a focus upon the
architectural possibilities of the wall, not only in terms of space
dividing abilities but also in terms of containing space itself. We will
study the topic technically, culturally and historically. The insistence
on the complex architectural performances of the wall is a reaction to
the current tendency of seeing it foremost as an instrument for energy
efficiency or as a simple private-public boundary.

Learning outcome

Learning goals:

Learning to solve and present a complex housing program, based on the
needs of a growing user group. Practicing to meet the task in an
experimental, yet realistic way in terms of functional and technical
development

Working and learning activities

Project development in physical model and drawing. Presentation with diagrams, perspective, plans, section and facades. Hand-ins with model/drawing, text and oral presentations in plenum. Perspective-workshop. Shared presentation model and catalogue for the studio.

Course content

Existing buildings and the built environment represent important resources for society. Maintaining and developing this resource is crucial both for a sustainable use of resources as well as for preservation of important cultural history.

Existing buildings are not limited to buildings that are important for the preservation of cultural heritage. Any new building will immediately become an existing building which then needs to be maintained and developed. Making reuse possible is therefore also an important aspect of the design of new buildings.

A focus on architectural and cultural history is often synonymous with a focus on details, facades and architecture as object. However, the great diversity of spatiality in the history of architecture is equally important, and is at the core of the focus on spatiality of this course.

The specific design task in this course is to incorporate new use in the 4600 sqm locomotive plant situated in Middelalderparken in Oslo. This is a big industrial building in brick completed in the late 19th century. The building has now lost its original function and is currently in use for various small workshops and offices in the middle of the park.

The students will through measurements, registrations and analysis get to know the building well. Students will also draft the building, its space and study the various architectural elements’ contributions to overall spatiality.

Parallel to this, students will conduct analyses of relevant buildings and periods in the history of architecture. With this knowledge students will further develop the spatiality of the locomotive plant with new interventions.

Course teacher: Tor Olav Austigard
Other teacher: Kjetil Sæterdal

Learning outcome

The students will get to know aspects of existing buildings, such as materials, building technology and understand the relationship between such historical parameters and the form of the building.
Students will study various periods of architectural history closely, and strengthen their understanding og the relevance of architectural history to contemporary architecture.
The students will be confronted with typical issues and dilemmas related to maintenance and development of existing buildings. Through theoretical works as well as design projects students will get introduced to the building conservation practice and develop their own position in relation to this.

Working and learning activities

Teaching methods will be: Lectures, assignments, fieldwork, excursions and project work. All methods are relevant, but there will be a specific focus on drawing and text. Exams and Assessment methods: Participation and delivered assignments.

The Studio for Research and Production of Architecture offers a research-oriented master studio in architectural design. In autumn semester 2015 the guest-professor in the studio will be Japanese architect Takaharu Tezuka from the Tokyo based practice Tezuka Architects. www.tezuka-arch.com
+
The technology is becoming more and more invisible these days. For small children there is no longer difference between water- colour and iPad. We are supported by technology, but technology doesn't represent fthe uture any more. Technology became nothing more than a tool to achieve a eal human life. The dream about better society doesn’t represent future either. What are then the forces today that drive architecture into the future? We invite students to imagine and find a future to represent past and present with architectural form and space.

In discussion with teachers each student will have to choose the site and the program to work with. We will recommend some specific zones of interest for the projects. Of course, this will be a hard topic to discuss, but we don’t want students to make choices without any resistance.
+
Given only these few basic instructions students should decide everything themselves during the design process. The discussion on the conceptual development of individual projects, programs, sites etc. will start after the introductory research phase of the work. With the theme NOSTALGIC FUTURE we would like to envision — and bring to life — a series of interesting architectural projects that combine personal spaces with infinite versatility and to create buildings that could become a kind of living art.
We hope that this short, clear and elementary starting point could generate an inspiring frame for development of engaging and strong poetic projects in the studio.

Learning outcome

- formulating the independent and prejudice-less thinking about architecture, about its spatial organization, structure and materiality, and its constituent elements
- stimulating the individual awareness of todays positions in architecture
- stimulating the awareness of one's own architectural position and one's own attitude toward the work with architecture
+
After finishing the course, the student should:
- be able to develop his/her own clear and consistent architectural working method
- be able to develop principles for structuring of both basic and complex architectural material and develop it through different scales into a final project
- be able to develop and apply the architectural knowledge about the specific project themes chosen to work with during the process
- be able to creatively use the architectural research in the project
- be able to develop and draw precisely own project through different scales, from the conceptual design to its final constructive and material stage.
- be able to present and communicate his/her architectural idea and his/her final project through the appropriate forms of representation, with drawings, models, diagrams, photos, 3Ds, etc.
- benefit from the work with a foreign guest-teacher and from the confrontation with his architectural thinking, knowledge, experience and imagination.

Ferdigheter
After finishing the course, the student should:
- be able to effectively communicate his/her architectural ideas and positions through texts, architectural drawings and models in different scale, photographs and renderings
- be able to lead public discussions and reviews on his/her own individual project
- be able to execute digital- and hand-production of models and architectural drawings etc in different scale, using the most advanced programs and techniques

General competence
The general goal of the Studio is to rethink and reinterpret themes, concepts and tools of architecture through a collaborative project with the guest teacher in the studio. In working with architecture architects work with various tools. Construction, space, program, site, context, form, sustainability, materiality and atmosphere offer just some of them. The choice of ideas, themes and tools and the way to work with them varies from one architect to another, from one project to another. Sometimes they are more recognizable identities, sometimes less. Developing ones own clear, consistent and creative attitude towards the things one chooses to work with is what studying architecture is all about.
+
Also, the idea is to focus on development of the individual working method through the research-based architectural design. In parallel to the main project “another project” would go on: the individual investigation of means and processes necessary for research and production of architecture. By organizing the semester work in a matrix-like structure that combines both the conceptual, analytical and intuition-based approach, the studio would like to disclose the individual potential that usually remains hidden behind the end-result of the project. By pursuing the research within a partly self-defined, partly given framework, we would like to question the preconceived images and norms of traditional design work and to initiate the processes revised by new cognitions, opened to unexpected architectural solutions.

Working and learning activities

The main aims of the teaching in the studio will be:
- to create motivation to the analytical thinking and the causal architectural expression
- to stimulate, cultivate and articulate personal discussions with teachers, as well as open public discussions within the studio, on development of the projects
+
The studio-work during the semester will be conducted in 4 steps. The duration of each step will be approximately 1 month.
- the first part of the semester: individual research with open public discussions in the studio
- the second part of the semester: individual work on the project structured in 3 steps in-between the 3 public reviews in the studio
+
Each step would be discussed both independently, as infiltrated into each other and connected into the main project as a whole. In this way, each of the steps will hopefully leave clear traces onto the final project. Weaving the research in and around the main project would lead students to make visible another story, the story of their own position and understanding of architecture. The short assignments or workshops will be introduced during the work.
+
Our particular interest will be to investigate the relationship between architectural presence, materiality and the concept, starting from an idea of architecture that coherently fuses representation and its internal spatial and tectonic qualities. Therefore, beside the drawings, the projects will be investigated and developed by architectural models in different scale. They will be then photographed to test and represent the anticipated idea of the project. The final project will be presented with text, big-scale drawings and models, photographs, renderings etc.
+
The teaching will consist of studio-work, studio lectures, individual crits, discussions and table reviews, public presentations and lectures structured in-between 3 big public reviews with Takaharu Tezuka.
After the first phase of the work, at the end of September we will organize 12-days study trip to Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto, Ise, and some islands in Japanese Sea)
+
Exams and assesment methods:
- the active presence and work on the project in the studio during the whole semester
- in the research part of the semester the assessment will focus on:
1. the architectural sensibility and awareness of the architectural problems,
2. the clarity of argumentation, built-up during the process
- in the project part of the semester the assessment will be based on:
1. the evaluation of the quality of the project idea,
2. the strength of conversion of idea into an architectural project,
3. the evaluation of the artistic, intellectual and architectural capacity to confront the creative risk involved in the project
- the prepared project-material and presence at 3 public reviews
- the delivered complete project for the exhibition AHO Works and for the final review 15 – 18.12. 2015
- the studio-work is evaluated with Passed ‚or Not passed, jf. Regulation for Master Studies at AHO‚ pt. 6-14.

Completed foundation education. Basic prior knowledge in CAD tools such as Rhino, Solidworks, Alias, Blender etc. is required.

Course content

Informed descicionmaking for 3D printing aims at informing and giving in-depth insight into. It seeks to teach master students at AHO the various possibilities that lay in the various 3D printing technologies that are available.

The Oslo School of Architecture and Design boasts of state-of-the-art Additive Manufacturing facilities. The ‘3D Print Verkstedet’ today acts as a service provider for students to realize complex, physical objects. 3D printing is an additive process, able to create physical objects in a wide foray of materials. There are today many different technologies available. What they all have in common is the possibility of creating freeform, tangible items that are based on a digital blueprint. The workshops at AHO have traditionally been run by specialists, while the global evolution and maturation of the technology has led to a democratization of its uses.

The course has a theoretical and practical approach to 3D technology, introducing the student to essensial digital and physical tools. The course involves case work.

Learning outcome

Knowledge
With the completed studies the student will be able to descripe all the relevant processes involved in the 3D printing process: from generation of digital formats, to post-processing of physical models. In addition the student will be equipped with the knowledge of which processes are most relevant in order to achieve desired results. “3D Print Verkstedet” is today equipped with 4 different 3D printing technologies: FDM, SLS, SLA and 3DP. The various technologies have unique use areas, utlilizing different material- and construction processes. The students will after completed course be able to make informed decicions on how best make use of different processes.

Skills
With the completed studies the student will be better equipped in utilizing the latent potentials of the technology in the setting of product-/interaction- and architectural design. The student will obtain first-hand knowledge of the operation of a variety of technologies available at AHO: powderbased, extrusionbased and light-polymerizing 3D printers. The student will possess the neccessary knowledge involved in preparation and pre-processing of digital CAD files.

General competence
3D printing is increasingly involved in design and architectural processes, as a tool for prototyping and construction. The course is meant for design- and architectural students at masters level, that seek a deeper insight on the utilization of 3D printing, in their studies and elsewhere.

The student should be able to explain the choice of methods for realizing the tangible object, and why.

Working and learning activities

As with other elective courses the course will consist of weekly learning activities, leactures, material exploration and use of available 3D printing recources. Each course day will be introduced with a lecture in subjects such as ‘model building with 3D printers’, ‘The 3D printer as a democatizing tool’, ‘The Technology in a historical perspective’, etc.

During the elective course week at the end of the semester, a larger project is to be conducted and presented for the rest of the group. A goal for the course is to exhibit these projects, as a way of informing others on how 3D printing technology can best be utilized at AHO, and in other creative settings.

Fokus i 2.
Det vil bli gjennomført to studioprosjekter i høstsemesteret.
