We use various types of playing as ways of rehearsing and practicing for an independent adult life: training balance, building social competence, experiencing justice.

As human beings we need to practice all the different categories of play in order to grow and evolve. How can the lack of variation in playgrounds be counteracted so that other age groups can practice other types of play in areas of other forms and materials?

Finnish Lapland, until now known for its pristine nature, is on its way of becoming a playground for foreign mining companies that capitalise on the landscape with the blessing of the authorities. The project extrapolates this development into a bleak game world and sketches out its underlying logics: the story, the spaces, the rules, the actions and interactions.

By literally playing the ground—exploring the landscape, balancing the mine and its environment—the player is exposed to questions of ecology, economy, and politics. Who wins and who loses?

Öxarfjörður sits at the outskirts of the habitable world, it is a place where the powerful nature can be felt on the skin, where it is possible to let go of everyday stress and let it be blown out to sea, past the horizon and out of exictence.

Capillarity plays a crucial role. The valley’s topography guides the spread and accumulation of water to the ground and plants for percolation and storage. Plants bring water up the roots and stems, returning moisture to the environment. Rain percolates down through soil and rock to the water table.

The coastal area will gradually loose much of its land under the sea, forming a series of new islands due to sea-level rise. Millions of climate change refugees have begun to migrate to higher land, however it has been predicted that by the year 2100 approximately 5 million people will continue to live in the coastal delta.

Far from the thoughts and things of home... simply there and open. Water, as it crashes down rock. Darkness. A depth, there, with which you are one.

I wondered what it would mean if the human could become less subject-like, and the physical less object-like. What would be left? How could it be done? And what consequences would this have for the human’s relation to their surroundings?

The background of this project has been to rethink the prevailing strategy regarding preservation and development in the Wooden Town in the city of Stavanger. Despite the relatively high density of people, there is today a lack of urban qualities, such as public spaces in the Wooden Town.

This project has been investigating how introducing a new public provision in a 19th century housing zone can add qualities of richness and diversity into the urban fabric.

Within the factors that can make the world possible to clarify for the deafblind, like structures in time, space and person, predictability and recognition, I searched for a space where the deafblind's common world of life can flourish. This search led to a garden and a pool in connection to Eikholt nasjonalt ressurssenter for døvblinde, Helen Kellers Vei 3, 3031 Drammen.
