Om emnet

Through architectural projects, Studio Positions continues to critically discuss and investigate how architecture reflects on, contributes to, and provides for dwelling in our contemporary multicultural society.

Building on the themes from the 2020/21 Venice Biennale of Architecture – HOW WILL WE LIVE TOGETHER?, and the 2022 Oslo Architecture Triennale – NEIGHBOURHOOD, the studio will investigate not only the single unit (A HOUSE) but the notion of COMMUNITY.

In an ideal world — where mutual respect for each others’ lives, identities, beliefs, cultures and traditions prevails – can we establish an understanding of a common foundation for architecture, where the collective is the starting point for discussing architectural quality in design for dwelling? Will such a starting point, free from the class and capital hierarchy, change our way of looking at and designing houses/homes for our time?

How do you, as an architect, want to contribute to an architecture that discusses everyday needs and inclusive architectural qualities –  safeguarding the diversity of the NEW COLLECTIVE.

Pedagogy:

The studio has a research-based teaching, were the student is encouraged to develop an individual formal language, and through different medias investigate architectural issues/questions based on a given topic. With a practice-based research and a sensual approach to technical challenges, we aim at a deeper understanding of the fundamentals of architecture and thus position oneself in the continuous architectural discourse.

Structure:

In relation to the theme, students work towards an architectural project through three phases:

  1. Framing an architectural concept
  2. Imagining a life (scale, materiality, activity, accessibility, structure)
  3. An architectural project

This work is accompanied by continuous written reflection (words) to be discussed in workshops.

Om emnet

The brief for the fall 2022 semester will be to design a medium sized public building on a specific urban site. The work will be individual and all students will be developing their architectural proposals based on different programs.

The TAP studio acknowledges that architectural quality depends on our care for tangible and measurable, as well as emotional and immeasurable dimensions.

The Building in Life studio has a special interest in the temporal aspects of architecture. Hence, formal, spatial, structural, material and tectonic responses to the program and the site will be explored and discussed through the lens of temporality.

In addition to the emphasis on teaching the art of building design, the T A P studio has a special interest in the structure and presence of the unbuilt architectural project (e.g. student work and paper projects), hence there will be a focus on the framing and the formatting of the students’ individual work.

Site, or other relevant framework for the task:

The site for the project will be in Venice, Italy. Every student will be given a specific site within the Dorsodura district.

Main output of the students work:

A building proposal narrated through models, drawings, illustrations and text.

Praktisk organisering og arbeidsmåter

There will be a set schedule for the semester with a detailed weekly program consisting of input on Mondays (lectures, plenum discussions based on relevant texts and occasional viewing of films appropriate to the theme of the studio), individual desk crits on Wednesdays and pin-ups on Fridays where the students are encouraged to engage in and discuss each other’s work. 

During the semester there will be a week long workshop focusing on architectural illustration.

The design process will be divided into distinct phases from idea to detailed project and finalization. Each phase will be reviewed collectively with an external critic.

If allowed, an excursion to Europe will be part of the studio.

The ACDL studio (Advanced Computational Design Laboratory) is a project studio which seeks to discuss and investigate how new technology and engineering contributes to shaping the architecture of the future.

We strongly believe that architects of today need to keep up with, and master some of the vast possibilities of computational tools. At the same time we place great importance in nurturing the classical tools in the Architects toolbox; such as hand sketches and model building. You cannot move forward if you don’t know where you came from, and oscillating between analog and digital unlocks the biggest potential for finding creative solutions to architectural challenges.

ACDL offers a holistic approach to architecture with a strong emphasis on computational design, technology and parametrics. We teach the students to investigate architecture and space through an iterative process, and through disciplinary/interdisciplinary collaboration. We also put great importance on investigating effective and professional ways to convey our ideas to others, be it through partidiagrams, models, sketches, VR/AR, video, renderings.. or something else all together!

We wish to offer an arena to those who have renegade ideas that can challenge conventional thinking, or who find themselves drawn towards the less well trodden paths within our field. Academia has a great responsibility in encouraging imaginative and innovative ways to create architecture. Our ambition is to build up ACDL as a strong platform for practicing and research on how new technology can enrich the architects toolbox, and lead to novel architectural expressions.

Praktisk organisering og arbeidsmåter

Initial short exercises with defined topics related to the main assignment leading to interim deliveries. The exercises are aimed to gradually work up a field of studies to be utilized in the main assignment; a design proposal in context.

2/3 of the semester will be for the main assignment. The studio will focus on iterative design processes to test and evaluate performative aspects of designs in relation to spatial and functional demands. The research by design will be done through a range of computational methods and tools based on the focus of each topic and design project in the studio. The topics of the studio narrow the focus, while allowing the students to do in-depth investigations simultaneously. The intention is to help the students develop their own design methodology while bridging analog processes and digital tools.

Om emnet

GK1 er en introduksjon til profesjonsstudiet i arkitektur ved AHO. Semesteret er organisert omkring flere ulike prosjekter som utgjør hoveddelen av kurset. Semesteret innledes med en konseptuell arkitekturoppgave parallelt med en introduksjon til frihåndstegning. Deretter følger en oppgave der studentene gjennomfører et prosjekt fra idé til realisering gjennom bygging i 1:1. Semesterets siste fase fokuserer på analyse gjennom analog og digital tegning. 

Undervisningen i første studieår markerer starten på et sammenhengende forløp, og de kunnskaper og ferdigheter studenten tilegner seg, bygges det videre på gjennom de tre årene i grunnutdanningen. Det er karakteristisk for utøvelse av arkitekturfaget at alle de kompetansene man tilegner seg virker sammen som en helhet, og manifesteres gjennom prosjektarbeid.

 

Læringsutbytte

Studenten skal få kunnskap:

  • om konseptuell idéutvikling ved selv å gjennomføre flere konseptuelle prosesser
  • om forholdet mellom rom, konstruksjoner og materialer gjennom utvikling av egne prosjekter der dette testes ut

Praktisk organisering og arbeidsmåter

Studentene arbeider i to studioer, men undervisning og oppgavestilling er felles. Det er lagt opp til individuelt arbeid så vel som gruppearbeid.

Undervisningen foregår i form av ukentlig veiledning, gjennomgang av prosjektarbeidet, forelesninger, seminarer og workshops. Kontakten mellom lærere og studenter foregår på tomannshånd, i grupper eller i plenum. Felles gjennomganger der studentene legger eget arbeid frem for diskusjon utgjør en viktig del av undervisningen. Det forventes tilstedeværelse og aktivt engasjement i veiledning, gjennomganger og faglige arrangementer. Kurset benytter den digitale læringsplattformen Moodle til intern kommunikasjon av semesterets innhold og planer.

The course surveys architectural thinking from the last two decades, looking at contradictory and complementary tendencies on the contemporary scene. Each week we read and discuss texts on a particular theme, ranging from the many alleged “turns” in contemporary architecture, to overriding topics such as gender, colonialism, and climate change.

Good systems-oriented design projects proceed several times through the loop outlined in a ‘systems-oriented design creative process framework’. This thorough process guides concept selection and validation by means of various methods. In this module, students will progress their own projects through the framework and receive training in the range of methods. As a connected aspect, we will also practise co-creation and facilitation.

Om emnet

Denne modulen retter søkelys mot den formelle verden av lovverk, forskrifter, forvaltningsapparat og politikk. Temaet er samspill mellom roller, mandat og aktører, men det blir også kastet lys over typiske konfliktlinjer og uenigheter. Det store spørsmålet er hvordan de ulike aktørene håndterer dette, i møte med de formelle dokumentene - men også med hverandre - og hvilket spillerom de har med tanke på å utføre den rollen de innehar. Modulen diskuterer politikkutforming og strategier for gjennomføring der det fokuseres på offentlig og privat samspill i dagens byutvikling, med særlig vekt på vernespørsmål. Vi ser på gjennomføringsstrategier, prosessuelle redskaper, medvirkning, lovverk, roller og rolleforståelse, politiske prosesser, maktstrukturer og uformell makt.

Vi henter fram noen av strategiene, prosessene og verktøyene fra tidligere moduler for å diskutere dem i denne sammenhengen. Dette er den siste rene fagmodulen i studiet (modul 9 er viet forberedelse til masteroppgaver), og det er derfor naturlig å samle trådene fra studiet i oppsummerende diskusjoner.

Læringsutbytte

Studentene skal få nær kjennskap til de berøringspunktene det er mellom offentlig og privat sektor med tanke på kulturminneforvaltning, på mange ulike nivåer. Seminarene understøtter tidligere innsikt i praksisverdenen med skreddersydde forelesninger om forvaltningsprinsipper, håndtering og tolkning av lovverk, mandat og roller i forvaltningssystemet, politiske perspektiver på vern m.m. Studentene skal sitte igjen med god innsikt i dette.

Praktisk organisering og arbeidsmåter

Modulen består av to seminarer og litteraturstudier.

Seminar I:        

  • Forelesninger og diskusjoner. Dette seminaret er felles med urbanisme.

Seminar II:       

  • Forelesninger og diskusjoner.
